Innovation in prosthetic technology is changing lives – Spronken Orthopaedics opts for comprehensive care

An article recently appeared in the Gazet van Antwerpen about the possibilities of modern prostheses, following a story by Joe Claridge. The article also featured an interview with Tom Daniëls, technical manager at Spronken Orthopaedics. The article illustrates how significantly prosthetic technology has evolved in recent years, but also how innovation can greatly improve the daily lives of people with an amputation.

For Spronken Orthopaedics, evolution is a passion. We have been among the pioneers in technical orthopaedics for over 60 years and are constantly developing new solutions for orthoses and prostheses.

Technological advances in prosthetics

The modern prosthesis bears little resemblance to the wooden leg of a few decades ago. Thanks to new advanced materials and digital design methods (such as 3D printing), it is now possible to create prostheses that are not only stronger but also more comfortable. Technology has come a long way today.

Innovations such as microprocessor-controlled knees and digital modelling enable us to support movements more accurately and reduce energy consumption, for example whilst walking. The result is a more natural gait and greater stability for the prosthesis wearer.

High-tech orthopaedics is a craft

At Spronken Orthopaedics, our more than 60 years of traditional expertise and modern production techniques come together in a unique way. Digital scans and 3D printing make it possible to tailor prostheses very precisely to the patient’s anatomy and activities.

This evolution has transformed our technical orthopaedics sector enormously. Whereas prostheses were once primarily functional aids, today they are increasingly becoming integrated high-tech solutions that support mobility and independence. The Paralympic Games are a wonderful example of this and serve as a kind of ‘proving ground’ for us and the athletes we support.

Comprehensive care through the Amputee Care Center

At Spronken, innovation goes beyond technology alone. With the Amputee Care Center (ACC), we have developed a specialist prosthetics centre where technical expertise is combined with long-term support.

In the Gazet van Antwerpen newspaper article, our staff discuss the challenge: some prosthesis users tend to use their prosthesis less frequently over time. The prosthesis is then often no longer comfortable or has technical faults. Fortunately, through systematic follow-up and adjustments, we can often prevent this.

The Amputee Care Center team, who spoke to the Gazet van Antwerpen – Tom Daniëls and Femke Loisse – explain how comprehensive care, bringing together technology, rehabilitation and everyday practice, is the next-gen approach.

Vision and leadership in the sector

The strategic development of Spronken Orthopaedics is led by Caius Spronken. As a visionary, he has placed a strong emphasis in recent years on innovation, bespoke solutions, digitalisation and international collaboration. This vision has helped us, as a company, to grow into a true pioneer in the field of prosthetics and technical orthopaedics. By continuously investing in innovation and patient-centred care, we are positioning Spronken as a pioneer within the sector.

The future: better technology, better patient experience

In the coming years, prosthetics and orthotics technology will develop further through the integration of lighter materials and improved digital design methods. For Spronken Orthopaedics, the focus is not only on technological progress, but also on the overall experience of the orthopaedic aid user. A better fit, improved aesthetics, more attractive, modern designs, greater comfort and more natural movement are, in our view, at the heart of future innovations.
